Some familiarity with key or appropriate sources is a criterion. Interesting or pertinent details are one indication of an ability to navigate and interpret the key facts and ideas. Focus and flow are other indicators. Refer to ongoing effects of events or decisions during this period on events and decisions several decades later.
A sense of history is shown by identifying the causal processes of significance. These may include economic, demographic, social, institutional, political and cultural factors depending on the topic and the direction that you and your research take.

There are three choices, with a lot of choice within two of the three options. =
Option 1
Select a key episode (perhaps two) in the economic and/or social development of Australia from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to about 1820. Use historical and economic reasoning as appropriate to analyse what occurred and why it occurred, and explain why the events or decisions were significant to the period under consideration and in the period prior to 1850.

Option 2
What did Governor Macquarie achieve? Critically evaluate his term in office. Did he affect the course of Australias economic and/or social development?
Option 3
How and why did the events of the 1890s shape institutional design and/or policy decisions in the decades prior to World War 2 (1939)? Concentrate primarily on one key theme, such as industry and trade (e.g. tariff) policy, agricultural policy, immigration policy, aboriginal policy, or fiscal and/or monetary and/or banking policy. You may refer to some other themes, but focus on one.
