Discussion 1: Resume Revisions

A strong resume sets you up for success in securing the job you want in your field of study. An important accompaniment of a strong resume is a career objective. With a career objective, you are using key terms and industry words that reflect the position you desire.  This will allow a recruiter to evaluate whether or not you are a good fit for the position.

First impressions matter! A resume is a document where you can showcase your work history and areas of expertise. You want to make sure that your career objective matches the job description so that your experience is a good “fit” for the employer. Oftentimes, the career objective is the only aspect of the document that the company will look at before they either (1) keep your resume to review or (2) discard it. Grammar, format, sentence structure, and clarity in your objective are all important components of a clearly written and defined career objective. In your initial post,

• Draft an objective statement paragraph to accompany your resume that
  • Clearly defines the position you are seeking
    • Instructor tip: Make sure that the position you are seeking is clear, concise, and consistent with what the company is looking for. 
  • Utilizes keys terms and industry words that reflect the position you desire
    • Instructor tip: Conduct some research on key terms and words in the industry. Be sure to use these words accurately by reviewing documents and websites that utilize these words.
  • Showcases your most relevant skill sets to fulfill the position
    • Instructor tip: You will want to weave in your experience throughout the career objective statement. Again, make sure that your experience is relevant to the available job description. 
  • Discuss, in a separate paragraph, how your resume supports your career objectives
    • Instructor tip: How does your resume support the career objectives? Discuss your experience, expertise, skill set, and career goals in this paragraph. Be sure to keep the information organized and interrelated
