Valuing and Providing a Fiscal Justification for Nursing Tuition Reimbursement

This assignment will help you explore how hospitals are making cutbacks in spending. One of the areas marked for cutbacks is monies used for continuing education. Nursing leaders are being asked to justify these costs.

You are a nursing leader in a hospital or a healthcare facility. The chief financial officer (CFO) has told you that unless you can develop a fiscal rationale, the hospital will no longer pay for tuition reimbursement and professional certification of nurses.

Develop a 4- to 5-page proposal that addresses the following:

• The cost of these programs versus the return on investment for the hospital.
• The return on investment for a nurse going to school. For instance, if you send a nurse manager to get his or her masters, how can you track that he or she is a better leader?
• The argument and position, which includes the cost of education versus the benefit to the hospital.
• Recommendation to the CFO in fiscal terms.

Here are some additional helpful tips as you work on Projects:

• When formulating your Week 3 Project you should be able to justify why you need certain human and other resources to provide exceptional patient care (satisfaction, safety, quality, etc.).  You need to ensure that your responses are understandable to a non-clinical leader, like a Chief Financial Officer or Controller.
• Use topic sub-headings throughout your assignments that match the grading rubric. But, do not just copy the grading rubric into the assignment as a sub-heading.
• The Project assignment instructions required 4-5 pages of content. This does not include the Cover Page and Reference Page(s). Follow standard APA formatting.
• If you are providing a fact or statistic, you need to provide a source (APA reference) to that stated fact.
• Please be careful when using foreign sources to support your application of theory to U.S. healthcare organizations!  Especially when the subject matter is finance.  Foreign countries do not follow U.S. financing rules and regulations!
• Also, if you are using a textbook as a reference/in-text citation, include the page number within the in-text citation.
