part 1 question 1,2,3 need total 350 words answer

Imagine you’re a magazine editor, and you just published a well-researched article on the potentially dangerous side effects of a new diet drug. The article is one of a series of three articles you are planning on the hazards of diet drugs. The manufacturer of the drug, who buys a significant amount of advertising in your publication for its many products, calls and says, “Don’t ever run an article like that again.” The advertiser (the drug manufacturer who you wrote about in the article) threatens to pull their advertising and not buy advertising from your magazine in the future.

For this assignment, think about the relationship between editorial content and advertisements in magazines, and how magazines cope with the desire for editorial independence and the drive for advertising revenue. Please complete the following questions.

What are the potential impacts and consequences if you do not run the other articles (The articles might contain important health information for your readers) and you keep the advertiser?
What are the potential impacts and consequences of you go ahead with the articles? (The drug manufacturer, who is an important advertiser in your magazine, might stop buying ads from you. What if this causes your magazine financial trouble – like cutting jobs or even going bankrupt? )
After outlining the consequences of both sides, please answer — what would you do as the editor? Why?

1. Informing your readers of the potential health risks of a drug advertised in your magazine is absolutely imperative in my opinion. If readers view the add from the publication and do not consult a physician, and then consume the drug, there may be negative side effects. The severity of the negative side effects may result in a lot of legal trouble for the magazine. This reflects very poorly on the integrity of the publication, as it may seem as if those involved in the publication do not care about the well being of their consumers. If the publisher chooses to publish the article that warns consumers, there may be backlash from the company that purchased the advertisement space.

2. The drug manufacturer I am assuming will be very displeased with the publication if the article is printed. However, many factors may impact how the publication needs to address this issue. If the money made from the advertisement does not heavily impact the publication financially, there is no need to pull the article. The price of angering the drug manufacturer may be easier to rebound from in comparison to the multiple lawsuits that may come from recommending a risky diet drug to consumers.

3. As an editor, I believe it would be my duty to inform the readers of all sides of the story. Publishing an advertisement that projects a single story is very dangerous and uninformative. Legally, there is more at stake if an editor prints a advertisement without informing their consumers of all the dangers associated with the drug. Aside from the legal backlash that might occur, morally it is wrong to advertise a drug that may not be healthy for all consumers. Informing consumers on all sides of the drug is the morally right thing to do. I personally would have a difficult time laying my head down at night knowing the publication I worked for promoted a risky drug to it’s consumers. Although financially this may cause more burdens, I believe doing the right and correct thing is what is most important at the end of the day.

It is known facts that journalists owe a duty of candor and honesty to their consumers. A journalist has a duty to do research and verify facts before publishing a piece for consumption. This duty also applies to “half truths.” One of the potential impacts and consequences of not running the other articles and keep the advertiser is that the truth won’t be published. Consumers rely on the information provided to them and not running the remaining articles about the drug may lead to misinformation being spread based on assumptions about what would have been in the remaining articles. Depending on the severity of the drug, this could lead to lives being put at risk for the purpose of pleasing an advertiser.

If the articles is published, one of the potential consequences and impacts is that the advertiser will stop buying ads in the magazine. As it is know, the source of income and profitability for magazines is the revenue derived from advertising. This may cause job cuts, less circulation of the news paper. Less circulation means that there are less consumers and less consumers means that the advertisers will be paying less. If the advertisers are paying less, that means profits will be less. If profits are less, if not gone, that may risk the existence of the magazine.

I believe that the property thing to do is to publish the articles stating the potential effects of the new drug. I think that this is proper because i believe that journalists’ first duty is to the consumer and not to their advertisers. The only reason magazines have advertisers is because they have consumers. Once the magazine looses consumers, they will also loose advertisers. And the easiest way to loose consumers is to lie. Once a journalist has been exposed for saying a lie, or not saying the full truth, people will no longer consider them a reliable source, and at the point, they will loose and consumer and advertisers too. So, if she is going to loose that advertiser either way, she may as well just do it saying the truth. And who knows, maybe the magazine can find a competing drug manufacturer to take their space!

1. Books continue to be popular, even with so many other media choices. Why do you think the availability of television and cable has not substantially decreased the number of new book titles available each year? What do books offer that television doesn’t?

2. Discuss the relationship between books and tv/film.

There is a famous quote that says ” a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.” I believe that books continue to be popular even though there are so many different media choices available because reading gives a person to internalize the material that he is digesting. When one reads, the person has to use his or her own imagination to visualize the images that the writer is trying to portray. It is because of that intellectual stimulation of the mind that books continue to be written and bought by the public. Reading is not just something that placed in from of the and does not require the use of the imagination, it is journey that a person is taken on and requires deep and thoughtful consideration to the words and meaning meant to be portrayed by the author. Unlike books, television/movies do not require the same thought process by the consumer as reading does. Literally, the picture that the television producer or director wants the consumer to see is placed on the screen. There is not much room left for interpolation by the consumer. Reading on the other hand, leaves room for the consumer to imagine how they think the story transpired. And more likely with reading than television, can a person find a different experience of a character.

Both the textbook and the articles nicely discuss the relationship between books and TV/Film. One point that the is made is that the creativity of a story is created in a book and then re-adapted into its own film. The reason being is that the ability to tell a story comes through the use of words. But not just the use of words in general, but words that trigger intellectual and emotional reactions. For that reason, we rarely see book adaptations of movie and more commonly see movie adaptations of books. Because the story must be said through words before it can be communicated in a picture. To my shock, the articles quote unbelievable statistics of the rate of books adapted to movies and TV series. Books provide the story that is illustrated on screen in a movie or television series.

1. I think books are the most elite form of media consumption. Books provide a creative freedom that movies and television do not allow for. Consumers can create characters and plots and settings to be seen in anyway they choose through the use of their imagination. Movies and television series make those production choices for the consumers. Aside from consumers being able to make creative choices, books promote the use of imagination, I believe that, unfortunately, this practice is being lost. With everything being digitalized, consumers these days are not challenged to use their imagination. Along with the utilization of imagination, the consumer is sharpening their vocabulary and increasing their literacy when reading books. This is not taking place when media consumers watch television shows or movies. Books are much more mentally stimulating, and challenge the consumers to engage more. I believe there are a lot more healthy benefits from reading, and this is why books have withstood the test of time. Books provide an experience that is entirely unique to them, regardless of the technology that is developed throughout time.

2. Books inspire movie plots time and time again. Many of Hollywood’s most popular blockbusters have been based off of books and hit books series. These timeless and rich plots are further immortalized by turning them into a film, and projecting them to a larger audience. By putting these plots on a big screen, these stories reach farther. Structurally, movies mirror books. It is important to have all the key structural elements of book plot in a movie plot to ensure a full circle story that has no gaps. Although movies and films can enhance each other, there is room for error when turning a book into a cinematic masterpiece. Often times tried and true book consumers are unhappy with the movie adaptation.
