1.Hamlet was ready to take revenge the moment he found out his father was murdered by Claudius. Once he learned who was the killer his mind quickly forgot about everything going on and only focused on getting vengeance. When his fathers ghost exposed himself to Hamlet he was determined to get Claudius, after discovering how Claudius killed his father and how his mother had an affair with his uncle while he was still alive.First he tried to put on an antic disposition to get Claudius to think he was harmless and to see if he was the killer, however it did not work out which lead to Hamlet reenacting the way his father was murdered. This play of his fathers murder was his way of seeing the guilt in Claudius, ” The play’s the thing Wherein i’ll catch the conscience of the king” (Act II, scene ii,581-582). This play is what shows that Hamlet should be believed and trusted to catch Claudius guilty conscience. Although he had to step back and rethink his actions because of the lack of evidence against Claudius, “I’ll have grounds More relative than this” (Act II, scene ii, 538-5390). He was confused if the ghost he spoke too was a devil that was trying to make Hamlet commit a sin. This is when he decided to do the reacting of his fathers play for more evidence. When he decided that he needed more evidence on Claudius also shows that Hamlet was to revenge his fathers murder, Claudius.

2.Following the ending of Act II of Hamlet, I am not entirely sure whether or not Hamlet is truly ready to avenge his father’s murder at the hands of Claudius. Obviously, he comes up with the plan of having the recently arrived players reenact his father’s death in front of King Claudius, in order to see his reaction and determine his guilt. Since the conversation with his father’s ghost at the end of the first Act, Hamlet has been shown as well as said to have been acting somewhat insane. Although he told his friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, that he is not truly insane all the time when he said, “I am but mad north-north-west. When the / wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw” (Act II, ii, 402-03), it is not entirely clear still whether or not he can be trusted. This is shown even more so, in my opinion, after the players exit when Hamlet lets out all of his anger with himself over having done nothing to avenge his father yet. His while monologue at the end of Act II shows all of his insecurities and other issues. He repeatedly refers to himself in demeaning ways, such as, “a coward” (Act II, ii, 598) or “pigeon-livered and [lacking] gall” (Act II, ii, 604). On top of that, the plan to expose Claudius’s guilt is not entirely well though out in my opinion. I am not entirely sure that a play would be able to expose the guilt of somebody who had recently murdered their own brother. All of these issues with Hamlet’s mental state and plan lead me to believe that he shouldn’t be trusted to “catch the conscience of the king” (Act II, ii, 634).

3.After reviewing Act 2 Scene 2, I feel as though Hamlet’s intentions are to seek revenge for the justice of his father. Here the Ghost states to Hamlet “Murder most foul, as in the best it is.But this most foul, strange and unnatural” (1,5,32). Hamlet responds “Haste me to know ’t, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge” (1,5,34). Hamlet listened to the ghost, (his father) and felt what he was explaining seemed to be genuine.

But, he still needs more clarification to go through with committing actual murder, that is why in his soliloquy he explained he is going to have the actors re create something similar of his fathers murder. Hamlet explains, “I’ll have these players Play something like the murder of my father Before mine uncle. I’ll observe his looks. I’ll tent him to the quick. If he do blench, I know my course” (2,2,598). From there Hamlet will be observing Claudius’s behavior and see if he has been thrown off by the actions of the play. After Hamlet deciphers Claudius’ emotions towards the play, then he will be ready to put his words of promising the Ghost to take revenge on Claudius into action. Hamlet will then fully believe what the Ghost claimed to him is the truth of his father’s death.
