Former Department of Homeland (DHS) Security Secretary Jeh Johnson served from December 23, 2013, until January 20, 2017, during President Barack Obama’s second presidential term. During Johnson’s term, he “led the third largest Department of the U.S. government, with a workforce of 229,000 employees and the 22 components of DHS (DHS, 2017). His responsibilities included leadership of cyber security, counterterrorism, protection of national leaders, protection of critical infrastructure, aviation security, border security, protection against chemical, biological, and nuclear threats, disaster response, and administration and enforcement of immigration laws (DHS, 2017).
One major accomplishment that Johnson helped to co-author was a 250 page report that led to the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell by Congress, which finally allowed members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community to serve openly in the military (DHS, 2017). Another major part of his legacy was his authority over “all drone strikes carried out by the Defense secretary and President Obama,” (Berman, National Journal, & Resnick, 2013).
