What is the impact of contextual factors on advocacy and policy? Contextual factors can range from internal (the organization, the practice, the environment, the culture, etc.) to external (laws, policies, politics, regulations, etc.). However, whether originating internally or externally, contextual factors have the capability of advancing or hindering an advocacy priority.

For this Discussion, you will consider how contextual factors impact policy making, focusing specifically on how these factors might impact your advocacy priority. Consider what contextual factors might promote getting your priority on the agenda, as well as those that might work against it.

This week, we continue to explore health and health policy in terms of contextual factors. Simply put, context means the setting of an event. From there, contextual means circumstantial, dependent, or environmental. Contextual factors are those factors that influence the context of a concept and are a way to categorize the outside effects or factors. For example – some contextual factors in health care may be personal / personal choice, social, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence and have an impact on an individual’s health care. In policy advocacy, some contextual factors may be: cultural factors, economic factors, social factors, political ideology, existing data, and historical events.

This week, we explore the contextual factors of our policy advocacy in our discussion board. You may wish to format your discussion post in this manner:

1. Introduction to your policy advocacy: Please include your specific population; the population’s specific health need; and your specific policy agenda. My specific population is Psychiatric patients with non compliance with medication.

2. Two to three context factors that will promote your policy agenda.

3. Two to three contextual factors that will work against your policy agenda.

4. Your strategy moving forward with your policy agenda.
