In the first week of the Health Map Investigation, the focus was on monitoring and identifying new and specific outbreaks in the northern regions of the world using the healthmap.org website. Three outbreaks were identified across North America, Canada, Russia, and Europe.

Communicable Disease: Influenza A (H1N1)

Location: New York City, New York, USA

Outbreak Specifics

Causes and Symptoms:

The outbreak of Influenza A (H1N1) in New York City was primarily caused by the rapid transmission of the H1N1 virus. Symptoms included fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue (Forster, et al 2020). The virus was easily transmissible from person to person, leading to a surge in reported cases.

Confirmed Cases and Affected Population:

As of the latest update, there have been 500 confirmed cases in the city. The affected population consists of individuals across all age groups, with a higher prevalence among children and the elderly.
