PSY 102 – Fundamentals of Psychology II

Due Date: , Points: 100 Overview: The Midterm is designed to assess your understanding of the concepts, theories, and empirical findings covered in the first half of the course. It aims to measure your knowledge and ability to apply key concepts and theories to different scenarios and evaluate your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. You will analyze a case study. Instructions: Case Study: "Patient X, a 35-year-old artist, was involved in a car accident two years ago. Since then, she has reported changes in her perception. Notably, she claims to perceive sounds as colors and colors as sounds, a phenomenon known as synesthesia. Furthermore, she has started practicing meditation and claims to have experienced altered states of consciousness during deep meditation sessions. Her altered states of consciousness have also had an impact on her perception of the world. Your task is to understand the sensory, perceptual, and consciousness-related aspects of Patient X's experiences."

• Research: Begin with a thorough literature review of synesthesia, altered states of consciousness (specifically during meditation), and any possible links between the two. Discuss the current theories and findings related to these topics.

• Ethics: Discuss the ethical considerations that need to be considered when studying and discussing Patient X's case. How can psychologists respect her autonomy, privacy, and dignity while learning from her experiences?

• Sensation and Perception: Analyze Patient X's experience of synesthesia using the concepts of sensation and perception we discussed in class. What might explain her unique experiences? How might these experiences influence her artwork?

• Conscious and Altered States: Explore the concept of altered states of consciousness in relation to Patient X's meditation experiences. How might meditation influence her sensory and perceptual experiences? How does this relate to what we know about consciousness and its alteration through activities like meditation?

• Synthesis and Proposal: Based on your understanding, propose a research study that could further investigate the connections between synesthesia, meditation, and altered states of consciousness. Your proposal should include a research question, hypothesis, and an overview of the methodology. Also, consider any ethical implications and how they can be addressed in your study.
