This article demonstrates the crucial reason for learning and development and why it is required to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) and how this can be achieved. The hypothesis is developed through an extensive review of scholarly literature which leads to the formation of a practitioners guide for learning and development. The findings are that employees can be a direct source of SCA for their company by applying RBT through employee training and development initiatives and programs. This paper has originality in that it appears to be the first to explicitly link the practical application of RBT with employee training and development initiatives and to provide examples of how this can be achieved. while there is evidence, and arguably widespread acknowledgment, that employee competencies such as knowledge and skills can be a source of competitive advantage for a firm, very little has been explicitly stated as to how one translates to the other. Ulrich (1991) argued precisely this but did not reference RBT at all and provided no analysis of how human competencies can translate to competitive advantage.
