“When it comes to electric vehicles there are positives and negatives when it comes to impacts on the environment. While electric cars don’t directly pollute the environment the manufacturing and mining of minerals for electric cars and the battery’s that they use. There is also the impact that eclectic cars will have when they have reach the end of their life span. Today a lot of car go to junk yards where they sit for sometimes years before they are destroyed or recycled. There is also the matter of where the EVs get the electricity to charge their batteries.
So are EVs in a state where it would make sense for widespread adoption with current technology? In my opinion yes and no, while electric cars might be healthier for the environment in the long run there are a lot of considerations that need to be taken into account. We need to be aware of where the products to manufacture the cars come from, were they mined in an environmentally conscious way? Is the electricity that is used to charge the car generated from environmentally friendly sources? I personally think that fully eclectic vehicles are the way of the future but we need to me very mindful of how they are manufactured and charged. While eclectic vehicles are expensive today that will not always be the case. As technology advances prices will drop as manufacturing becomes more and more efficient and sustainable.
The government offers incentives for purchasing eclectic vehicles and I believe that yes they should continue to do so into the future until an affordable eclectic car is manufactured. Though doing so will also impact those who do not want an eclectic car since the money for these incentives has to come from somewhere.
Are there better ways to promote other forms of transportation to reduce our impacts on the environment? I did a project for on of my previous classes where some cities in the US had fully converted old city streets into sustainable and walkable areas. These were called green belts or green spaces where trees and other plants are planted along side walking and bicycling paths. These green spaces added almost luxurious ways for pedestrians to get around their city and form my research were very well received by the local populations.
Is its impact on the environment generally positive, negative, or neutral?
With my chosen technology PVT solar systems have much the same issues that electric cars do mostly in the manufacturing process.
Does your selected technology promote greater equity in society?
This is tricky as the answer is both yes and no, PVT solar systems would promote better equity when it comes to energy independence and lowered demand for fossil fuels. The issue is access to the technology, certain groups or communities may have issues accessing the technology for a variety or reasons.
Are there any groups who benefit from it, or are harmed by it, more than others?
While anyone would see a benefit from the installation of PVT solar systems, some peoples who are not able to afford or PVT systems may see an increase in there utility bills as people convert over to solar and energy companies see a decline in usage.
