SWOT Analysis of Your Organization
Every organization or agency needs structure to form a strong organization. There are many ways and reasons why it’s significant to assess its strengths and weaknesses. According to Maihemuti, Wang, W. Wu, and Wang, H. (2022), a SWOT analysis is a strategy businesses or organizations use to measure their assets, disadvantages, future opportunities, and potential threat. Therefore, I am using the SWOT analysis to evaluate my current employment, which is SETA Head Start. The purpose of this analysis is to get a closer look at my employer, SETA Head Start, and find the four classifications listed in the SWOT analysis.
Strengths
There are many strengths within SETA Head Start, though, I chose the three top strengths to discuss. The first strength is offering a low ratio to give better quality for students. According to De Schipper, Marianne-Riken, and Geurts (2006), the lower number of students per caregiver increases the high quality and more adult-to-child interaction. SETA Head Start has a ratio of one teacher to eight students for preschool and one teacher to four students in toddlers. I believe keeping low ratios is important for both employees and consumers. It allows teachers to help or challenge individuals more for their maximum learning.
Secondly, SETA Head Start takes on new challenges by being the first to try a new program. I believe it is a risk when taking on new challenges however, this is a strength within the organization for adopting programs and not letting it stop them from seeking new opportunities and growth.
Lastly, they offer resources and workshops for families and help them build resumes to enhance their qualifications for employment. I believe offering resources and workshops for parents is another strength of the organization because many daycares offer this to parents. Other agencies that I’ve worked for in the past prioritize maintaining full enrollment versus supporting families.
Weaknesses
Some weakness of this organization is not offering enough professional training for employees. I believe this is important because it will help employees to understand and gain knowledgeable information about their employer. Most importantly is teaching staff how to handle and overcome hardship situations at the center base.
Secondly, another weakness of SETA Head Start is that some centers are in the apartment complex, condos, churches, and school district properties. Therefore, the centers located in apartment and condo complexes can be either a hit or miss depending on the location. Some centers are in areas that have a higher population of homeless. This makes it hard for the employee to maintain full enrollment. More importantly, it leads to families and employees feeling unsafe and the facility has a higher chance of getting broken into.
Lastly, I believe SETA Head Start lacks communication skills. I feel that communication is the key to success and minimizing misunderstanding as much as possible. For example, I have a parent who was not happy due to an incident that occurred at school, however, she violated our adult conduct policy by confronting another parent, who is a minor. The parent later complained to upper management regarding how the staff handled the situation. The way upper management managed the situation made me feel like there was no staff support. More importantly, later that day, I found out upper management transferred that child to a different center, through another family service worker. The big picture here is the child is under my case management, and it would be appreciated if upper management communicated the changes with me. Therefore, I can better prepare all the appropriate documents needed for the transfer, instead of rushing it last minute.
Potential Opportunities
Strength within SETA Head Start that can potentially lead to opportunities is helping the family to succeed and meet their goals. According to Halle, Banghart, Zaslow, Cook, Kane, Bartlett, Redd, Bamdad, Cox, and Lloyd (2019), resources have many benefits for low-income families, however, there are not enough affordable community services available for them to access. At SETA Head Start, the family service worker provides different resources to help the families to meet their goals and follows up with families yearly. Offering resources to family allow the organization to grow because it connects staff with parents. It also gives the organization a good reputation and potentially opens the door for future workshops to increase future funding.
Secondly, they offer a few apprenticeships such as parents’ apprenticeships and College student apprenticeships. I believe this is an opportunity for the organization to grow and draw more consumers to SETA Head Start. Moreover, it allows parents and college students to gain knowledgeable skills within the agency and field.
Lastly, another potential for the organization is they have recruiters go out to the community and recruit. They also set up events for the community to come and join to learn more about the organization. I believe this outreach to the community will help highlight the agency and define what the agency has to offer and help low-income families.
Potential Threat. A few things I see in the organization that can be a threat is not offering earlier services for parents who work early in the morning. For example, SETA Head Start centers open at 8 am and closed at 4 pm or 5 pm, depending on the centers, therefore, some families worked early in the morning before 8 am or right at 8 am and cannot commit to the hour service. While private and home daycare opens longer hours services that are more likely to meet varieties of parent’s work schedule. I believe SETA Head Start hour services can be a threat and lose consumers to private daycare or home daycare.
Secondly, the organization lack staff support. To be straightforward, teachers are the backbone of SETA Head Start. When there is not enough staff support from upper management it leaves the teacher overwhelmed and stressed. I believe staff support should be a priority to keep teachers confident in their daily activities, however, when any organization doesn’t provide enough staff support, it leads to high turnover within the organization.
Lastly, another potential threat is expanding too fast. When expanding too much, too fast it can potentially threaten the organization due to not being able to manage and monitor every center properly. On top of that, the organization has a high turnover rate, which means that the organization will have to do massive hiring. It can also jeopardize the organization because of the desperation of staff. Lots of training will have to take place and proper training is crucial.
Conclusion
In conclusion, SETA Head Start has many pros and cons in the organization, just like any other organization. The SWOT analysis gives me a thorough understanding of my current employment. There are some strengths and weaknesses that I knew all along, however, there are also a few that I just realized while using this SWOT analysis to evaluate. The SWOT analysis is a great method for organizations to use and apply to enhance their organization. Indeed, this is also a great strategy to help organizations to become strong competitors.
