Marianne is 64 years old and identifies as a member of the Stolen Generation. Her mother was assessed as being unable to care for her and Marianne spent most of her childhood living in an Aboriginal mission with limited contact with her family. Staff while living at the mission physically and sexually abused her.
Marianne married another man from the mission when she was 19 and they had two children together. However, her husband died in custody after being picked up by police for ‘drunk and disorderly’ behaviour when she was 29. Marianne began drinking alcohol heavily after that and she was assessed as not being able to look after her children by Community Services. Marianne didn’t see them for years.
Marianne began a relationship with another man who was physically violent towards her, resulting in several hospitalisations. When she left him, she had little money and no home and since then has lived in refuges, with relatives and on the street.
Marianne has an alcohol-related brain injury, although she stopped drinking six years ago. She has presented to your service as homeless – she really wants to get stable accommodation and be able to spend time with her grandchildren.
