leaders, policy makers, and healthcare providers to have a more standard terminology. The terms "health information technology" and "health informatics" are still not clearly defined or understood. Health information technology is a broad term often used to identify the computers and programs used in the maintenance of health records. Federal legislation such as the Affordable Care Act, HITECH Act, HIPAA, and the EHR Incentive Programs brought the term "health information technology" (health IT or HIT) to the forefront in healthcare (Hersh 2009). Figure 1,2 provides an example of transforming data into informatics using temperature to determine which medications are prescribed for fevers over a six-month period. Figure 1.1 illustrated the basic concepts that comprise health informatics, the clinical, the technology, and the financial and management aspects. In figure 1.2, the temperature, 40 C/ 104 F is the clinical data, the technology is the EHR and pharmacy systems, and the financial and management aspects could be related to which medication seemed to be the most effective in treating the elevated temperature. The financial and management implications could be determined by analyzing the patient’s return to normal temperature in a timely manner, length of hospital stay, comparison of outcomes with drugs of varying costs and then comparing these outcomes to other patients and medications. The results of the comparisons could then be used in the treatment of future patients and for considering the most cost-efficient manner for treating patients with similar conditions. Designing new solutions is the goal of informatics. In healthcare this includes augmenting biomedical science and improving the quality of care and health in a cost-effective manner.
