Relationship between Ethnicity & Socioeconomic Status in Mental Health Paper

 

 1. General requirements

 

 –The term paper should be typed and double-spaced.

 

 –The length of the paper should be 5 pages.

 

–The paper is June 2 (Wednesday of Week 10, midnight). Penalty for late papers is 4 points per daily deadline (out of a total of 40 points).

 

1. Selection of a topic and readings

 

 –The topic should have been studied cross-culturally Suggestions:

 

–Select a topic that is of interest to you –Select a topic that is manageable in scope

 

 –Find three studies that are on the topic you selected but were done by different researchers.

 

PLEASE NOTE: For this research paper, you have to use empirical journal articles, NOT newspaper or magazine articles. *** (One easy way to judge whether the article you have is an empirical research article is to see whether there is a section labeled “Method” and another one labeled “Results.”)

 

Suggestions: –Some often-used strategies in looking for studies on a topic are:

 

(1) Find relevant articles in the reference sections of the papers you already have.

 

• 1. Use on-line database (e.g., Google Scholar, PsycInfo, PubMed, Current Contents, etc.) Contents of the paper

 

–Introduction (5 points)

 

–Introduce the topic

 

 –Provide some background information about the topic

 

–State why it is an important topic to study –State how you will organize the paper

 

–Summary of the studies (24 points, 8 points for the summary of each study)

 

 –Give background information about the studies (who, when, and why) –Briefly describe how the studies were done

 

 –Present the major findings or the findings that are of interest

 

–Discuss the consistencies and/or inconsistencies among the studies

 

–Critique the studies

 

 –Assumptions

 

–Methods (e.g., sampling, design, instruments)

 

–Interpretations (e.g., gap between results and conclusions) Note: Make sure you give ample justifications for your critique

 

–General conclusions and implications for future research (5 points)

 

 –6 points for quality of writing. A good paper should have a clear presentation and a logical organization. It should also be free of grammatical and spelling errors.

 

1. Also: –The paper can follow any standard style (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.) If you are not sure about the style, consult your TA or read a review paper.

 

 –Make sure you cite the references when appropriate.

 

 –Plagiarism results in a 0 point for the paper.

 

–We suggest that you start working on the paper early and allow yourself enough time to re-read, revise.
