Nursing: A Stable Career Essay Paper

There are approximately 3.6 million nurses in the United States. There is a projected unmet demand for nurses equaling almost 1 million nurses by the year 2025. Most of this demand comes from pending retirements and the exploding new roles for nurses. Roles for nurses include bedside nursing in hospitals, post-acute care facilities (i.e, rehabilitation, long-term care, home health, etc.),Nursing: A Stable Career Essay Paper school nurses, faculty at academic institutions, advanced practice nursing (e.g., certified registered nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner), medical provider offices and nurse leadership. There are so many different opportunities in hospitals alone that include emergency, critical care, perioperative, med/surg and labor and delivery. Nursing is one of the most trusted, stable, and in-demand professions in which a person can make a real difference. Everyone will need a nurse at some point in their life.

In the Permian Basin, we have a Health Careers Consortium with leaders from each academic institution (e.g., Midland College, Odessa College, University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Texas Tech) and health care leaders from each hospital to promote health careers. We educate our community about the many opportunities in health care, not just nursing. At Midland Memorial Hospital we have a Youth Health Service Corps open to any high school student in Midland interested in a health care career. Many activities are planned to expose the students to as many health care careers as we can in the short time we have them. For nursing students, we have a strong nurse intern and nurse residency program to assist with transition to practice.

We strive to provide a nursing workforce reflective of the people we care for, including ethnic and racial minority groups. Of the 3.6 million nurses in the United States, approximately 10 percent of them are males. Every day, nurses make a positive difference in our patients’ lives by providing high-quality care and services. Choosing a career in nursing is not an easy decision. No big career decision in life comes without a bit of research about the opportunities that a certain job might provide.

The same principles apply to the nursing career. The good news is that nursing is one of the safest career paths when it comes to job security. According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, by 2020, nurse employment is expected to grow by 26%, faster than the average for all occupations in the U.S.

Historically, the nursing field is one that has consistent positive job outlooks, as there is typically a continued shortage. Healthcare is the backbone of most communities, not just for its services, but also for the jobs it provides and the economy stimulation. Jill Bernstein, author for “Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization” states, “The health care industry is a critical component of the national, and most regional and local economies of the United States” (4). The nursing field has suffered challenges due to the economic, social, and the political downturn of the U.S. Nevertheless, there is still some noticeable growth taking place and opportunities available. The economy has produced some challenges for the nursing field. With the unemployment rate so inflated, it has left many Americans either uninsured or underinsured. This directly affects those working in the healthcare field. Bernstein, reported “The American Hospital Association 2009 survey of community hospitals found that 9 in 10 had made some cuts in response to economic concerns, including reducing staff, administrative expenses, or reducing services” (4). Bernstein added that doctors are finding the amount of patients with unpaid bills has increased as well as seeing a decrease in patient load (4). Both of those decrease the amount of money allocated for nurses pay, resulting in reduced hours, pay, or benefits. Individuals without insurance coverage tend to put off elective procedures or put non-emergency procedures on hold until their economic status improves. The long hours and difficult cases you encounter in hospitals can be physically and emotionally draining so not everybody can face all of these challenges.
