Hello class, after reading the article provided above about the response when Hurricane Sandy arrived, it is evident there should be more emergency training. Many to most of the nurses in the study expressed concern in the fact that they were not confident in their roles or what to do in the emergency evacuation. Not only do medical professionals lead the way during an emergency situation, but they are also expected to be fearless in their area and know exactly what to do when a dangerous situation occurs and the patients and their families need someone to look to. Families and patients look to them to lead them in what to do. As a future nurse, it is important I understand what to do in an emergency situation so that I can run myself and the patients smoothly especially while under pressure. I know for a fact I would want to be prepared for an emergency situation so that I can accurately and effectively help to save lives and hope everything runs as smoothly as possible. Upon beginning work, it would be important for me to ask and understand what to do if an emergency situation/evacuation were to occur.

he nursing role during disaster preparedness includes the design and activation of the emergency management plan and education and training on all aspects of the potential incidents that could arise during and after the event. Also, the nurse is expected to deliver healthcare services to all patients and their families during the response phase of disaster management as soon as they are needed by the target population. Elderly patients are part of the vulnerable groups that are most impacted by natural or human-made disasters because of their unique medical needs and the involvement of multiple professionals in the delivery of services. In this regard, elderly patients make the delivery of healthcare services challenging for nurses due to the limited resources for their evacuation and coordination of services with other providers. For example, a study by Al Harthi, Al Thobaity, Al Ahmari, and Almalki (2020) revealed that the preparedness plan of most hospitals is inadequate for their personnel, including nurses to deliver their care responsibilities to their patients. Therefore, nurses should endeavor to gain additional hands-on training to improve their knowledge of disaster planning, response, and recovery.

Nurses can acquire skills to deliver prompt and effective healthcare services during disasters to patients through training opportunities that are provided by various private and public agencies (Said & Chiang, 2020). The training that is offered by the National Nurse Emergency Preparedness Initiative (NNEPI) is one of the options for nurses to use the simulations, case scenarios, and video presentations to develop the competencies to fulfill their responsibilities to their patients during a disaster involving weapons of mass destruction. Other training programs for gaining hands-on skills for disaster management are CDC’s Health Literacy Training for Public Health Professionals and FEMA’s Domestic Preparedness Resident Training for Healthcare responders. In essence, nurses have several learning opportunities to acquire the skills and competence to deliver their disaster management duties.
