12 Aug Race, Ethnicity, and Violence

Each student will prepare a graphic magazine focusing on selected topics relevant to the issue of violent crime. Your project must include an argument/question you are asking about the topic, then evaluating/analyzing and answering the question through research. Select 5 “articles” to help answer your question and support your points. Your discussion of the the magazine’s theme must be supported with researched evidence from scholarly books, journals, articles, and other sources.

This outline only needs to include the argument/question to be evaluated/analyzed and any articles you have found so far.

Listed below are some possible topics for the magazine and there are additional options in your syllabus.

• Race, Ethnicity, and Violence
• Proactive Violence Prevention/Treating Violence as a Public Health Problem (as opposed to deterrence and punishment)
• Sociological factors and Violence
• Age and Violence
• Gender and Violence
• Genocide
• Crowd Violence
• Hate Crimes

Note: If none of these topics appeal to you and you have another topic in mind, please check with the instructor to make sure that it is acceptable

Each magazine should be a total of 8-10 pages including approximately 2,500 words).

Your magazine should contain the following components:

• Compelling title
• Table of contents
• Introduction explaining the theme, question, argument and the potential answers (minimum 2 pages/ 500 words)
• Discuss research findings from 5 researched articles (minimum 3 pages/ 750 words each, for a total of 6 pages/ 1,500 words)
• Conclusion including questions for readers to consider (minimum 2 pages/ 500 words)
• References

Successful magazine submissions will:

• Introduce the paper and conclude effectively
• Contain an argument about the theme you have selected and the issues you have chosen to demonstrate that argument
• Provide a complete response to the theme you have chosen through the articles you write
• Express your argument clearly and persuasively
• Provide adequate supporting arguments, evidence, examples, and details to demonstrate your argument
• Demonstrate effective organization
• Use appropriate and direct language
• Acknowledge sources for quotes and ideas not your own through citations and references
• Use proper grammar, spelling, paragraph construction, and format
• Demonstrate originality and creativity

• The magazine must be a total of 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages in APA format (no abstract required).
• Use a maximum of 12 point font size and 1 inch margins all around. Those who do not follow style guidelines and page minimums will only receive partial points.
• Make use of at least 5 library scholarly books and/or articles and if you wish you can use a limited number of credible internet sources.
  • Your arguments should not be based primarily on internet or magazine article sources. Avoid magazine sources altogether unless there is an example of the research you are discussing.
• You must use citations whenever you refer to someone else’s ideas even if it is not a direct quote and you should be referring to research frequently.
