Individual with disability Discussion 11:
This chapter mentions that individuals with MS tend to live very sedentary lifestyles. As we know, a sedentary lifestyle is a health risk factor. What secondary conditions might an individual with MS be at risk for developing as a result of this sedentary lifestyle? What are some tips you might recommend for making exercise more accessible to a person with MS? Cite any sources you used to create your contribution.
Remember to create one original post and respond meaningfully to at least 2 classmates for full credit. Also list 2 cited sources on your original post..

Classmate 1 : There are several secondary conditions that an individual with MS could be at risk for developing as a result of a sedentary lifestyle. Individuals with MS may experience loss of muscle tone, weakness, poor posture, decreased bone density (increased risk of fracture), and inefficient breathing. Individuals with MS are also more at risk for developing obesity, diabetes, and cancer as a result. It’s important that individuals with MS get the exercise that they need so that they don’t develop more health issues on top of what they are already experiencing.
There are several tips that I would recommend for making exercise more accessible to a person with MS. Individuals with MS should look into exercising in water that does not exceed 84 degrees Fahrenheit. They should also stay hydrated because cold water will keep their body temperature low. It’s also important to exercise in a cool room and during cooler times of the day when exercising outside. Exercise can be painful for individuals who have MS so they should start off slow and remember that without pain there will be no gain. However, before starting a new exercise routine individuals with MS should consult a medical professional and they should prioritize safety to reduce risk of injury.
Classmate2: Having a sedentary lifestyle comes with so many risks, even for a person with no health conditions, so it would be even more severe for multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis News describes a sedentary lifestyle as a “primary symptom,” which leads to other conditions and morbidities, such as fatigue, difficulty in moving, numbness, cognitive problems, urinary problems, among others. On its own being sedentary also causes weight gain which leads to a long list of health conditions (diabetes, stroke, heart attack, cholesterol, death, etc.). The way to knock out these issues would be with exercise; however, the exercise must be planned well, as the PowerPoint says, it must be supervised, beginning at low levels and must be done safely. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society gives a list with ways to be safe such as being hydrated, exercising in cool environments, starting low, stretching, prioritizing safety, and others, starting small and going up from there will be a great start to help handle their condition.
