Imagine you are a journalist/editor/author for a blog/podcast/YouTube channel/newspaper/magazine, and you have been given an exclusive interview with one of four figures from the Iliad – Briseis, Nestor, Thersites, or Thetis.

Imagine you are a journalist/editor/author for a blog/podcast/YouTube channel/newspaper/magazine, and you have been given an exclusive interview with one of four figures from the Iliad – Briseis, Nestor, Thersites, or Thetis. You must choose one of these individuals and provide an interview, or a script of an interview, that you’ve carried out with them.

Each of these four characters serves a role in the poem, some greater than others; but they are all, in some way or another, affected by the moods of Achilles. Since most Greek and Roman myths are told from the perspective of those in power (like Achilles), the purpose of this assignment is to try and re-imagine these powerful characters from one particular mythical text (the Iliad) from the perspective of the marginalized.

You should fully grasp you chosen character – what do they do in the Iliad? Do they feature in other myths? How do their experiences inform their actions as described by Homer? In order to fully answer these questions, some additional research will be required. You will not only need to be intimately familiar with how your chosen character is represented in the Iliad, but also how they appear (if they do) elsewhere in ancient sources.

It will also be helpful to familiarize yourself with some aspects of Homeric society in order to contextualize your character’s depiction: for example, what role did a slave (Briseis), secondary king/chieftain (Nestor), lower-ranking soldier (Thersites), or mother/wife (Thetis) play in Homer’s world?

All that you do should be grounded in the ancient sources; and the purpose of any secondary material/research is to help you develop your character.

This paper is not a ‘traditional’ essay, but should still be coherent and sufficiently organized – it is not simply a creative writing assignment, and you will have to show engagement with your research material.

Any sources used (primary or secondary) should be cited at the end of the interview.

The interview should be 4-5 pages in length (not including title page and bibliography), double-spaced, and in 12-point font.
