Now that you know a little bit about scientific management (aka Taylorism), I would like you to think about where you can see the principles of scientific management at work in the world today. In your own workplace? In schools, colleges, and other educational institutions? In restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail establishments? In the doctor’s office or hospitals? In your classroom?
For this discussion, I want you to do the following:
Find a professional to interview. This can be a friend or a family member with some work experience. Ask them about their job and tasks they perform in the workplace. Try to understand whether their work is being subjected to Scientific Management (or if it is trending in that direction) and if so, how.
Keep the central features of Scientific Management in mind:
1) The division of tasks into increasingly smaller and increasingly deskilled components
2) The repetitive performance of a few basic tasks, which are standardized and do not require much brain work
3) The intensification of work, that is, an increased pace of work and or an increased duration of work
4) The intensification of surveillance and supervision, mostly through technology
Answer the following questions:
(a) Can you see the techniques of scientific management being used in this workplace? What are they? In what ways do those techniques produce efficiencies?
(b) If indeed, scientific management is pervasive in society, why do you think this is the case?
