04 Aug Do some research on different kinds of quilt patterns and quilt square patterns.
Research Component
Do some research on different kinds of quilt patterns and quilt square patterns. You can use Google Scholar (Links to an external site.) for this, or the GCC Library (Links to an external site.). Some quilts have patterns with historic and social meaning. For example, quilts were sometimes used as signals in the Underground Railroad to give directions or show what homes were safe, according to this National Geographic (Links to an external site.) article, and this article from Folklike (Links to an external site.). If you are having trouble finding an article you like, chat with the librarians who will be happy to help you research quilt patterns with historic and social meaning connected to areas of cultural or social significance for you personally :-).
After Completing the Research Component
- Choose one square or pattern that you like, from your research (above).
- Paraphrase and summarize the history and meaning behind the pattern, colors, size, recipients, use, etc. Use your research, but think about it what you are paraphrasing — you don’t want your summary to take up more than 1/5 of this short paper. The summary exists for the purpose of your analysis — so that you can compare and contrast your ideas about the quilt pattern you found with your ideas about Walker’s story, “Everyday Use” and the quilt in that story.
Summarizing Your Research
- Be careful not to copy and paste from your research. And, even though you are using your own words, you still need to give credit to the author when you paraphrase or summarize (or when you quote directly.
- The sections from the GCC Writing Handbook that will help you with quoting and summarizing are “Integrating Quotes – Building a Citation Sandwich and “Scholarly Moves with Sources.”
- The only time you do not have to give credit is when it is your own thoughts, ideas, stories, or inter-connections.
Writing Your Essay
- Tell your reader about the pattern you’ve chosen, including a description of the pattern, and information about the history and meaning behind the pattern, color, size, etc.
- Explain why you chose the square or pattern, or what you like about it. This is a good place to use your positionality.
- Compare and contrast the meaning that you found from your research, with what you feel the meaning of the quilt is in “Everyday Use.” Please be sure to summarize the story first, and use quotes if relevant.
- Your essay should be 500-700 words.
- Cite your source(s) using MLA format and include a Works Cited page. The section from the GCC Writing Handbook that will help you with this is “MLA Citation Resources.”
