The client in the case study could possibly meet the criteria to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder but I feel more information would be needed due to the possibility of other diagnoses or additional diagnoses (APA, 2022). The client did describe having many of the criterion for major depressive disorder, however she also mentioned that she has hypothyroidism and is not taking her medication so she could have depressive symptoms due to this medical diagnosis (Walden University, LLC., 2012). The client also mentioned drinking a lot of alcohol so she could have depressive symptoms due to this substance use (Walden University, LLC., 2012). She has also just experienced a divorce and in the past she had a depressive episode after a psychosocial stressor so she could have an adjustment disorder. I feel to accurately diagnosis this client a lot more information would be needed.
This client is at risk of suicide. She made it very clear in the video that she, feels hopelessness, and has the means to end her life and all she doesn’t know is when to do it (Walden University, LLC., 2012). Factors we should consider when assessing the risk of suicide are, “being single, living alone, social disconnectedness, early life adversity, availability of lethal methods, sleep disturbance, cognitive and decision-making deficits, and having prominent feelings of hopelessness” (APA, 2022).
