Purpose – The purpose of this paper is for you to do a self-reflection about your own communication and to apply some of the communication concepts and terms that you have been learning in these first three chapters.

Directions – Review Chapters 1, 3, & 4 and respond to all of the following questions/prompts in an essay:

• Chapter 1: 

o Review the section on how communication fulfills basic needs (physical, identity, social and practical) in your textbook. Give two detailed examples, one when you tried to fulfill a physical need with interpersonal communication and another when you tried to fulfill either an identity need or a social need with interpersonal communication? When answering, briefly define the type of need first and when giving examples make sure the reader can understand how the example that you are giving shows how we use interpersonal communication to fulfill these needs.

o Review the Transactional Communication Model in your textbook. Discuss a time that you were trying to explain something to a friend or a loved one but you were misunderstood and explain that example by applying the parts of the transactional model. Explain what the channels you were using were, explain how noise affected your communication process, explain how the environment of each person affected the communication that was happening. Remember to briefly define each of these parts of the model before then giving a detailed example of how each part worked in your story. 

• Chapter 3: 

o Review the section on Intercultural Communication Competence in your textbook. Explain/define why being a competent intercultural communicator requires (a) motivation and attitude, (b) tolerance for ambiguity, and (c) knowledge and skill. Pick which one of these three you think is most important to becoming interculturally competent and come up with an argument with examples and/or evidence as to why you think this is. 

• Chapter 4:

o Review the section on how the self concept develops in your textbook. Explain/define how reflected appraisal works to develop the self-concept and how social comparison works to develop the self-concept. Give a detailed example from your own life about how reflected appraisal developed your self concept and give another detailed example from your life of a time when you used social comparison to develop your self-concept. Thinking about the two examples, which method of building your self-concept was more accurate?

• Your Choice:

o Some experts argue that the social distancing that we had to do during the Covid pandemic negatively impacted our interpersonal communication. Thinking about your own experience during the pandemic, do you agree or disagree with this idea. Give examples and details from your own life and experience to to build your argument.
