Global Issues Combating Global Problems Student Course Expected Result Assessment

Expected Result Statement: Completion of POLS 2401 – Global Issues will contribute to development of students who are engaged and informed global citizens, aware of global multicultural issues, and able to explain the differences among personal, social, political and economic decision-making processes at the state, federal and international levels of government. Students should be able to accurately answer the below questions.

Short Assignment Background Information

Political scientists have stated that “Although the study of world politics once concentrated almost exclusively on the political relationships between the countries of the world, today it involves a much broader range of activities and interactions-political, economic, and social-among these states and a wide variety of non-state actors such as international organizations, non-state national actors and ethnic groups, transnational corporations, nongovernmental organizations, and individuals. As time has passed, world politics has evolved to include an increasingly diverse set of states from the developed and developing worlds, a rich array of cultural perspectives and values held by states, nations, and individuals, and a great variety of non-state actors.”

Global Issues Public Service Project Overview: Students will engage with people beyond those enrolled in this course in regards to bringing awareness to global issues, stemming from state and/or non-state actors, with consideration of avenues contributing to improved or resolved global issues. Additional information regarding this assignment, including assignment instructional material and instrument will be provided to the class in conjunction with first week of class discussions.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights Assignment Instructions

Contact as many people as you can to discuss Universal Declaration of Human Rights with. Each student should contact at least 5 people. Summarize the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with persons contacted. In particular, educate and seek insight from persons contacted in regards to two human rights that you believe are most important after reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Consider using examples of such human rights issues throughout the global world. Consider conducting independent research if needed. Supplemental instructional materials to assist with completion of this assignment student accessible within Public Service Project Module. After discussing at least two human rights with persons contacted, students do the following:

Individually assess whether or not if persons contacted were familiar with Universal Declaration of Human Rights before your interaction with them about these rights.

Individually assess whether or not if persons contacted were familiar with your two Universal Declaration of Human Rights before your interaction with them about these two rights.

Individually ask persons contacted if they are willing to sign the global petition to implement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If yes, allow person to sign global petition to implement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Additionally, ask persons contacted if they are interested in receiving additional information about Universal Declaration of Human Rights via email. If yes, have person write his/her email address next to signature on petition. If signature not provided, just have person write his/her email address on petition.

Individually ask persons contacted what they think could or should be done in efforts to enhance likelihood that these human rights will become reality for all throughout the world.
