These past two years have given humans a taste of a truly global crisis; that of the CoVid (and variants) virus. National economies have suffered, local economies have suffered, families have suffered, students have suffered; it’s been a mess. Chapter 19 discusses some of the responses to such medical catastrophes; chapter 20 discusses population growth and decline by introducing Thomas Malthus, an 18th-century theologian who posited dire consequences for Earth if the population was not controlled.
Malthus theorized that there were three things that would ‘naturally’ keep the population in check.
Identify these three influences and discuss whether you think Malthus could be correct? Are the Corona Virus and its variants some of the ‘checks’ he spoke of? Will the casualties that are guaranteed in the Russian attack on Ukraine have any significant impact?
