Elizabeth Blue Diagnostic Analysis Paper
After watching the film Elizabeth Blue (2017), write a diagnostic analysis paper, which will include the sections outlined below. The DSM-5 should be your primary resource as you complete the diagnostic sections of the paper. An APA paper template is available on the course Canvas page. Please note that the diagnostic impressions you provide in this paper are for the purpose of practicing critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry; official diagnoses are reserved for real cases and are made by fully trained psychiatrists, psychologists, or general practitioners who are licensed to practice. Submit one copy of the complete assignment per group. Please also fill out the short group evaluation form, which can be found on the course Canvas page, individually by the assignment due date.
DSM-5 Diagnosis of Elizabeth
Diagnostic Impressions
In this section, provide your full DSM-5 diagnosis of Elizabeth, according to your observations during the course of the entire film. If you include more than one diagnosis, list your diagnoses in the order of clinical importance and focus. Indicate which diagnosis is of most clinical importance (principal diagnosis) and if any diagnoses are given based on a strong presumption that the full criteria will ultimately be met but that given the current observations, not enough information is available to make a firm diagnosis (provisional diagnosis). Include the code numbers before each diagnostic listing, and include all relevant subtype and specifier information for the diagnosis, according to the full DSM-5 details. Use V codes/Z codes to provide additional contextual information relevant to the case; these can be found in the section called, Other Conditions That May Be a Focus of Clinical Attention (pp. 746-758 in PDF version of DSM-5; pp. 715-727 in printed DSM-5). Note any medical conditions that may be relevant to the diagnosis (the codes for general medical conditions can be searched via www.icd10data.com).
For example, this is the DSM-5 diagnostic formatting for a hypothetical case (not related to this film):
300.4 (F34.1) Persistent Depressive Disorder, mild severity, with early onset, with pure dysthymic syndrome (principal diagnosis)
315.00 (F81.0) Specific Learning Disorder, with impairment in reading
315.1 (F81.2) Specific Learning Disorder, with impairment in mathematics (provisional diagnosis)
V61.03 (Z63.5) Disruption of family by separation or divorce
G43.919 Migraine, unspecified, intractable, without status migrainosus
Rationale for Diagnosis
Provide rationale for each of the diagnoses you provided in the section above. Systematically proceed through each of the DSM-5 criteria for the diagnosis, clearly indicating why each criterion is met or not met (with relevant evidence from the film to support your conclusion for each criterion).
Differential Diagnosis
In this section, identify each of the diagnoses which were considered but were ultimately not selected for this case. For each diagnosis under consideration, provide a subsection which highlights your thought process. Systematically proceed through each of the DSM-5 criteria for the diagnosis, clearly indicating why each criterion is met or not met (with relevant evidence from the film to support your conclusion for each criterion). Ultimately, these will be diagnoses you considered but which do not meet enough criteria to be applied to your official diagnosis above. A strong paper will include at least five relevant ruled-out diagnoses in this section.
Biopsychosocial Analysis
Discuss the origins and continued persistence of the problems using the biopsychosocial model.
Biological Contributions
Discuss the biological factors relevant to the onset and perpetuation of the diagnosed problems (e.g., genetic abnormalities, physical changes due to maturation or physical trauma, physiological differences in neurotransmitter and hormone levels, autonomic nervous system activity). Provide scientific evidence and in-text citations to support your analysis.
Psychological Contributions
Discuss the psychological and interpersonal factors relevant to the onset and perpetuation of the diagnosed problems (e.g., relationships with caretakers and peers, thought processes, emotional regulation processes, behavioral learning history, exposure to key experiences). Provide scientific evidence and in-text citations to support your analysis.
Sociocultural Contributions
Discuss the sociocultural factors relevant to the onset and perpetuation of the diagnosed problems (e.g., the impact of institutions and systems, cultural assumptions and expectations, cultural values impacting definitions of illness, experiences of prejudice and stigmatization). Provide scientific evidence and in-text citations to support your analysis.
References
Beginning at the top of a separate page, include an APA-formatted reference list, including full-text references to accompany your in-text parenthetical citations of the DSM-5, textbook, and other scholarly sources, such as peer-reviewed articles and edited book chapters. Do not use non-scholarly websites (e.g., Simply Psychology, Very Well Mind, WebMD); use the SNU Library search page to begin all searches for scholarly sources.
