W1 Discussion: That’s a Lot of Issues!
As we begin our discussion on a few of the global issues that exist in our world, we are going to start with an overview of global issues as a whole. There is no way we could discuss every issue that exists in our world or all the different iterations of that issue by country or continent. However, it is important we get a basic understanding of global issues that are facing the current generation as well as potential implications for future generations.
The United Nations (UN) is considered to be one of the truly universal global organizations, and world leaders, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), nonprofits, and advocates meet within the UN to discuss and address issues facing our world.
For this week’s primary discussion, we are going to look at what is a Global Issue and what issues the United Nations view as the highest priorities.

- Visit the "Global Issues Overview" (Links to an external site.) page on the United Nations website.
- Review "Overview", "Fast Facts" as well as "Issues and Campaigns" (located at the bottom of the page or by searching.
- Click on a few of the Global Issues located on the right side of the page.
Respond to the following questions in paragraph form:
- How do we define a "Global Issue"?
- Were you surprised by the issues on the UN list?
- What were your thoughts on some of the facts and statistics the UN highlighted?
- Which issue(s) concerned you most?
- Do you see any issues that are missing?
- What are some of the ways the UN is addressing global issues?
