In this discussion, everyone will examine the differences between correlation and causal relationships. Phenomena occur in a sequence, that is, they may be correlational, but there are important differences in how events interact, that is, their causal relationship. Causing an event to occur is different from being related to something that occurs in some proximity to the first event. Scientists emphasize these differences but often when reporting on scientific research, the new media muddies the water about these relationships. For example, scientists may say eating oatmeal is correlated to a reduction in most peoples cholesterol levels. The news headline then boldly states Oatmeal reduces cholesterol. While the scientists see a correlation, the news story seems to indicate a causal relationship.
In this discussion, you will show how social media has become an important pathway for disseminating scientific research results, with both good and bad results.
