Here is the prompt:
Write a short story (of 4-6 pages) that offers a way of thinking through the dimensions of one of the following questions. Your story should have a perspectiveit should offer some sense of whose eyes are viewing the events and dynamics you describe:
1 – What would happen if housework went on strike? What would that strike look like? What kinds of alliances would have to be built, and between whom? What would be the overall social effects of such a strike? Keep in mind in thinking this through that a strike doesnt necessarily have to mean an absolute refusal to engage in all forms of worksee, for example, the recent spate of teachers strikes in Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, and West Virginia, which have formed alternative education facilities (often in places of worship and other community centers), and have worked hard to gain the support of parents for their initiatives. In other words, a strike requires building relationships that allow for the refusal of work to happen. What would that look like?
2 – What would it look like if wages for housework were achieved? In answering this question, you dont necessarily need to adhere closely to the expectations laid out by Cox, Federici, etc. But if your story describes a scenario in which the achievement of wages for housework diverges widely from how these thinkers imagined it would, you might want to spend a little time in your story exploring how or why the achievement of the goal diverged from expectations.
This assignment is about taking evidence from multiple sources and creating a story/hypothetical that is 100% based in citable evidence. Claims must be substantiated, citations and evidence are 100% necessary in all instances, the more the better. This assignment is meant to show a relative mastery over the attatched materials, or at least one servicable enough to create a compelling hypothetical/narrative. Please try to keep the writing within the bounds of the included material, please do not use outside sources or current events.
