One policy initiative for 2022 is for CMS to decrease the maximum out-of-pocket cost for insurance by $400 (CMS, 2022). This decrease is more affordable for many families, and ties into the Affordable Care Act (ACA), so that families can afford healthcare. Many people, particularly in underserved and lower SES communities, cannot afford basic healthcare, let alone a serious issue that may arise (CMS, 2022). CMS is attempting to help lessen the financial burden to these populations, amongst others, that depend on affordable healthcare. As an advanced nurse, in any environment, it is important to be aware that not everyone can afford healthcare. Finding affordable alternatives for treatments is important, and advanced nurses should be knowledgeable and aware of their client’s SES so that they may suggest the best treatment in their price range. 

Another policy issue is that CMS has made it a requirement for any healthcare facility that is under the CMS umbrella to have their employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 (CMS, 2022). Unfortunately, as we have seen across America in the last 2 years, many healthcare workers are leaving the field for this reason, amongst others. Being vaccinated keeps the vulnerable populations that healthcare workers across the country serve. By having the advanced nurse be knowledgeable and participate in this CMS mandate, it helps keep populations safe and the APRN can help educate the community of the benefits of the vaccine.
