Here is a hot topic! What does the American Academy of Pediatricians say about corporal punishment and discipline? How have your experiences as a child being disciplined affected how you disciplined your own children, nephews, nieces, grandkids, kids you have babysat? What would you tell a parent when they express fear of disciplining their kids in public? What are some of the reasons that kids misbehave and need to be disciplined? What is the general opinion of the public regarding to Dr. Spock’s thoughts about disciplining kids- these kids are now Baby Boomers in their 60s and 70s who are caring for grandchildren, and you are involved because some of these people may be the primary caretakers of their grand- and great grandchildren? How would your advice to these older caretakers vary from advice you would give to young parents? Have you ever known anyone or personally been on the verge of losing control in disciplining a child? What were the factors that you think contributed to that potential loss of control? What kinds of issues would you discuss with parents in light of that question, so that they might note the warning signs of losing control?  What does the professional literature say about discipline, corporal punishment, causes of misbehavior, ramifications of harsh punishment or no punishment? Again, you do not have to own your own behavior (e.g., if you were ever ready to beat your child). What I want you to do is to get in touch with those feelings, if you have ever had them, so that you can empathize with parents in similar situations and ask the correct questions, diplomatically, to elicit information about whether the child might be at risk.
