In this final project, consider how social media and the internet perpetuates ethnic notions of African Americans, that as you will see from the documentary, were established a long time ago.

You can use PowerPoint or Google Slides if you would like to as they are great tools for this assignment. They have picture/text templates. This is useful for side by side comparisons. In Project #4 Perpetuation of Ethnic Notions is to watch the documentary below and answer the questions:

1. According to the film Ethnic Notions, what are some of the purposes of caricatures of African Americans?
2. Why did the caricature of the brute African American male surface during/after reconstruction? What image developed in the North as African Americans began a massive migration to urban cities?
3. What are the consequences of these negatives images of African Americans and how they influence Caucasians?  What about African Americans and other people of color?
4. Have there been improvements in representations of African Americans in media?  If so, what have you noticed? If not, why do you think not much has changed?

5. Find four (4)  Viral Videos that are most memorable to you where African Americans are featured. It can be home-made, a commercial, a YouTube video, a news story, anything that caught your eye that you want to share. Capture a still frame of the video and share a link to the actual video and answer the following questions in your presentation on each slide:

Tell us why you selected this viral video for this presentation. What does it mean to you and what do you think it makes others think of African Americans when viewing this video?
What media function, theory or effect does this example represent? Describe how and why (you may need to review Chapter 3).
After viewing Ethnic Notions, does this story encourage or discourage the promotion of stereotypes for or against African Americans? Did you notice any of the stereotypes from the documentary in your selected video?
