Susan is a new client and a 25-year-old female who works as a school secretary at a local high school

Susan is a new client and a 25-year-old female who works as a school secretary at a local high school. She has just revealed to you during the intake session that she has recently lost interest in most activities, has been sleeping a great deal yet feels tired all the time, and sometimes wishes she could cease to exist. She mentioned feeling as though she has been “a shell of herself” during the past year, following the school shooting at her workplace that left two students wounded, one teacher killed, and the shooter dead by suicide. After the investigation and reopening of the school, Susan has returned to work but has felt herself sinking deeper and deeper into depression ever since. When probed further about suicidal ideations, Susan admitted that she has considered killing herself, although she is uncertain whether or not she would actually do it. She said that she is currently in possession of a gun that her friend allowed her to keep in her home, since she believed she needed a way to protect herself, but she does not know whether she would use it.

You have consulted with your supervisor, who has agreed that Susan should be referred immediately for a psychiatric evaluation and has instructed you to arrange for Susan to go directly from your office to a nearby hospital. Susan told you that her mother accompanied her and is in the waiting room, but she has emphatically stated that she does not want her mother to know what is going on with her. How should this delicate situation be handled? Why? What are three ethical and/or legal concerns about this case? Additionally, using Chapter 13 of your Corey text for information, how might you address the community effects of the school shooting trauma brought to you by your meeting with Susan? What do you believe are your roles and responsibilities as a member of the interdisciplinary community outreach and emergency management response teams?

In your response, you must include the specific code(s) from the ACA Code of Ethics or the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors that address the concerns raised in the case. Be sure to provide the full text of the code followed by an in-text citation and a full reference at the end of your response.

To strengthen your response, you may also include citations and references from the Corey text or other assigned readings relevant to the topic.

This discussion question is informed by the following CACREP Standards:

2.F.1.c. Counselors’ roles and responsibilities as members of interdisciplinary community outreach and emergency management response teams.

5.C.2.a. Roles and settings of clinical mental health counselors.
