02 Nov Case Study Report
For this case study application report, you will be required to write a response to one of two scenarios. The purpose of this case study is to explain the analysis you conducted and the conclusions you made based on your results. In addition to your written report, you will also submit the worksheet where you performed your calculations.
Data and Data Analysis
The dataset is a collection of nutritional information for over 500 various fast-food menu items. It includes variables such as restaurant name, menu items, calories, total fat, protein, total carbs and sodium.
Instructions
You must choose only one of the two scenarios below for your report. You will not receive extra credit for answering more than one. To receive full credit, your response must:
Provide a well-written response to the prompt that is at least two paragraphs in length but no more than two pages. This submission should be your original work and demonstrate your understanding of the course material and the analysis you performed.
Include a detailed explanation of the calculations that you performed, including equations, statistics tables/distributions, and Excel functions . You may use functions such as =AVERAGE() and =STDEV(), NORM.S.DIST(), SUBTOTAL( ) as well as filtering, pivot tables and the DATA > DATA ANALYSIS > DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS macro in Excel to obtain the necessary statistics. If you are not sure where to start, look at correlation.
Provide a clear and concise recommendation regarding the scenario that shows your ability to conduct data analysis and apply it to a real-world application.
Attach the spreadsheet used for calculations with numbers corresponding to numbers in the report.
Submit two anonymous peer reviews after the report’s due date. You will have at least a week to complete these reviews, and they must be thorough.
Scenarios: Choose ONLY ONE of the following options:
For both scenarios, you will need to select specific restaurants or menu items. Explain in at least one sentence why you chose the ones you did.
Scenario 1: Calorie-Counting App
You are developing a calorie-counting app and want to include a feature that helps users identify low-calorie menu items from different fast-food restaurants. To make this feature more useful, you need to determine the average calorie content for the menu items in the dataset, and which restaurants have a significantly lower or higher average. Choose three restaurants from the dataset. Use descriptive statistics (such as mean, standard deviation) and an appropriate statistical test to compare the average calorie count of a specific type of menu item (such as sandwiches, salads, or chicken nuggets) across these restaurants. Make an argument for which restaurant’s menu would be a good starting point for a user looking for lower-calorie options.
Scenario 2: Fast-Food Nutritional Trend
The fast-food industry is trending towards offering healthier options, such as salads and grilled chicken sandwiches. You have been hired by a new fast-food startup to analyze the existing market and identify potential opportunities. Using the provided dataset, compare the nutritional profiles (such as mean, median, and standard deviation for calories, total fat, and protein) of at least two different categories of menu items (such as salads vs. burgers). Make a recommendation for which menu category your startup should focus on to attract health-conscious customers.
Common Deductions:
Incorrect use of filters (not using the SUBTOTAL( ) functions or copy and pasting to another sheet)
Not selecting specific restaurants / menu items to answer the question
Not attaching the spreadsheet with calculations made for the assignment
Not including the steps done in Excel in written report
Plagiarism Warning
Your submission must be original work to be accepted for a grade. Turnitin will be used to check for plagiarism. Any submission with a score of 40% or higher will automatically receive a zero and be subject to academic sanctions.
