Understanding PICOT

PICOT questions are structured to identify specific elements that guide evidence-based inquiry for clinical or quality improvement projects. Each element serves a purpose:

• P: Population or patient problem (Who is the target population?)
• I: Intervention or issue (What is the intervention or exposure?)
• C: Comparison (What is the alternative to the intervention, if any?)
• O: Outcome (What is the desired outcome or effect?)
• T: Time (What is the timeframe for achieving the outcome?)

Example of a PICOT Question

Scenario: A medical-surgical unit has a high rate of patient falls. The nursing staff wants to determine if hourly rounding can reduce falls compared to standard care.

PICOT Question:

• P: In adult patients on a medical-surgical unit,
