MUS 410 World Music Paper Guidelines Write a paper on an ethnomusicology subject of your choice.

1. Your paper should include some element of fieldwork. This fieldwork may be completed remotely/online.

2. Your paper should address historical context and contemporary society. 3. Sources: your sources should include the fieldwork above, primary sources, and quality

secondary sources. You must include at least one fieldwork example and one other primary source.

Assignments and due dates:

Week 12: Rough Draft (20%) – See rubric for grading guidelines. – The paper should contain the following:

1. Introduction: provides context for the thesis statement. What background information does the reader need to know to understand the thesis statement.

2. Thesis statement: the purpose of the paper. What is the main point? What is your paper showing or demonstrating? If you had to summarize the point of your paper in one or two sentences, how would you do it? “This paper will…” is a fine way to begin your thesis statement.

3. Body: this should provide evidence and examples demonstrating your thesis. A good model is:

a.) make a point b.) demonstrate or provide evidence of your point

4. Conclusion: what should the reader take away from your paper? 5. Your paper should address historical context and how your topic applies to culture

today. 6. Bibliography: alphabetized, using Chicago/Turabian formatting. Use your

fieldwork as a primary source, quality academic sources, and popular sources as needed.

7. Appendix: a. Fieldwork Report: include your notes and reflections from your fieldwork b. Soundscape c. Family Music Tradition

1. There should be footnotes throughout your paper. Any idea that isn’t original to you should be cited.1

2. Since the paper involves fieldwork, personal observations and descriptions are recommended.

3. If your fieldwork was a live, in-person event, just cite your own notes in the appendix.

4. If your fieldwork was conducted online, cite the source if possible. Otherwise, cite your own notes in the appendix.

Finals Week: Final Draft (80%) See rubric for guidelines. Note that part of your grade will be based on improvement

from the rough draft. Your final draft should include all sections included in the rough draft.

Combined length of Soundscape, Family Musical Tradition, Field Work Report, and Final Paper should be a minimum of 3000 words (not including works cited list on Final Paper) in 12 pt font (Times New Roman), double spaced (see Chicago Manual for exceptions and further explanation), margins no greater than 1.5”. Citations should be correct; include a works cited list. Sources should be reliable and appropriate. All formatting should follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
