Background:

– Born in the Bronx, New York, on October 13, 1989

– Graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and International Relations in 2011

– Worked as a bartender and waitress before entering politics

– Became the youngest woman ever to serve in the U.S. Congress at age 29

 

Views and Policy Choices:

– Strong advocate for progressive policies such as Medicare for All, free college tuition, and a $15 minimum wage

– Supports climate change action and has introduced the Green New Deal resolution

– Advocates for immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants

– Favors gun control measures such as universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons

 

Opinions Issues:

– Criticizes income inequality and corporate influence on politics

– Supports social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights

In conclusion, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a prominent progressive voice in the U.S. Congress, advocating for policies that address income inequality, climate change, and social justice issues. The congressional member's background (social, economic, educational, ethnic, gender, ideological) has a significant impact on my opinion of them. Specifically:

 

1.  Social Background: AOC's working-class background makes her relatable to many Americans who face economic challenges. Her experiences as a bartender and waitress give her firsthand knowledge of income inequality (Yazır, 2023). 

2. Educational Background: AOC's degree in Economics and International Relations demonstrates her understanding of complex policy issues. This education contributes to her ability to propose comprehensive solutions like the Green New Deal.

3. Gender: As the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress, AOC breaks barriers for women in politics. Her success encourages more women to pursue political careers (Yazır, 2023). 

4.  Ideological Alignment: AOC's progressive views align with many young voters who seek change from traditional political establishments. Her commitment to social justice movements adds diversity to her policy agenda.

 

5.  Ethnicity: As a Latina representative from New York City's Bronx district, AOC brings an important perspective on immigration issues and racial equality.

Congressman Mike Johnson, a prominent figure in the United States Congress, has made significant contributions to the nation’s legislative landscape. Born and raised in Louisiana, Johnson’s background is deeply rooted in the South, which has influenced his political views and policy choices. Speaker Mike Johnson is the 56th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and a Republican member of Congress proudly serving Louisiana’s Fourth District. Johnson’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and a Juris Doctorate from the Paul M Hebert Law Center. (U.S Congressman Mike Johnson, 2024).  His legal education has undoubtedly shaped his approach to legislation, often emphasizing constitutional law and individual rights. For instance, he has consistently advocated for religious freedom, a stance that reflects his personal beliefs and legal understanding. (Mike Johnson.house.gov, n.d).

Economically, Johnson comes from a middle-class background, which has influenced his policy choices. He has consistently supported tax cuts and deregulation, arguing that these measures stimulate economic growth and benefit middle-class families like his own. Ethnically, as a Caucasian male, Johnson represents the majority demographic in his district. However, he has shown commitment to diversity and inclusion through his support for various minority-focused initiatives. For example, he has backed legislation aimed at improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities. 

Ideologically, Johnson is a conservative Republican. His voting record aligns with traditional conservative values, such as limited government, fiscal responsibility, and strong national defense. For instance, he voted against the Affordable Care Act, citing concerns about government overreach and fiscal sustainability. My personal favorite that he voted for was bill number H. He also supports the Second Amendment rights and has opposed gun control legislation. 

Overall, my opinion of Congressman Mike Johnson is exceptional and largely shaped by his background and policy choices. His commitment to constitutional principles, fiscal responsibility, and individual liberties resonates with my own beliefs. However, I believe there is room for improvement in his approach to social issues, particularly regarding healthcare and gun control. Americans still lack access to affordable, quality healthcare. Similarly, existing gun control measures do not adequately address the root causes of gun violence. For both issues, a more comprehensive and proactive approach is needed to ensure equitable healthcare access and reduce gun violence.
