Module 8: Sample Activity Plan

Age Group: Preschool (3’s and 4’s)

Theme: All About Me

Curriculum Area(s): Math and Art

Foundations Standard(s): Goal HPD-5: Children develop small muscle control and hand-eye coordination to manipulate objects and work with tools.

Goal CD-2: Children recall information and use it for new situations and problems.

Goal CD-5: Children demonstrate self-expression and creativity in a variety of forms and contexts, including play, visual arts, music, drama, and dance.

Objectives: Children will be able to do the following:

· Talk about height and compare own height with height of classmates.

· Practice using a measuring tape.

· Use fine motor skills to cut and color.

Materials: The children’s bodies

Large Butcher Paper

Measuring Tape

Crayons or Markers (including skin tone crayons/markers)

Scissors

Activity: Lay a large piece of butcher paper on the floor. Trace each child’s body. If needed, help the children draw their clothing and then let them color their clothes onto the outlines. Encourage the children to color their hair and make a face on their body. Cut out bodies.

Have each child stand against a large piece of butcher paper taped to a wall. Use a measuring tape to measure each child and mark the height for each child. Help the children measure their height in inches. Put the child’s name and height on the butcher paper.

Have the child measure his/her cut out body.

If needed, assist the child in cutting out their bodies.

Decorate your classroom with their bodies.

Make a chart showing each child’s height.

Talk about height. Talk about who is tallest and who is shortest.

Evaluation: Open-ended questions to children about height. (Example: What did you learn about measuring your height today? What are other things that we can measure? What if we didn’t have a measuring tape? Are there other ways we could measure or find the height or length of something?)

Extensions: Leave the measuring tape in your math center and encourage the children to measure things in the classroom.
