27 Mar What is the future of social justice movements?

For this assignment, start by looking back at what you have learned about how social scientists study social movements, how social movements start, how they build a base of support, how they use frames and the media to get the word out, and how we evaluate the outcomes of movements. We have covered a lot of ground in this class!

In your final assignment, you’ll build on your Assignment 3, and speculate on the next stage of social justice movements. For example, consider the material from this week about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the tactics and, potentially, the effectiveness of social justice movements.

For this assignment, you will create one of the following:

a 5-8 minute audio or video recorded PowerPoint/Google slides presentation.

A PowerPoint/Google slides presentation with a script that would take approximately 5-8 minutes to go through.

In your chosen medium, you will hypothesize about the future of social justice movements, using the following to guide your thinking. Choose one specific social movement from the list you used in the Week 7 discussion to help focus your ideas. Feel free to draw on some of the ideas you developed in your Week 6 Assignment: The State of Social Movements, as well.

Instructions:

Start with an introduction that clearly states your response to the question: What is the future of social justice movements? “(For example, are social justice movements going to be more prominent in politics? In popular culture? Are more or fewer people going to be involved?)

How effective are social movements at changing society? Why?

What movement tactics (framing, use of social media, protest, etc.) are the most effective for movements now? Why? Will these tactics continue to be useful in the future? Why or why not?

Conclude by restating your thesis statement and summing up your main points. Then, predict your own future with social movements. Are you likely to start or continue to be involved in social movements? Why or why not? Are you likely to study them?

Be sure to cite at least 3 of the resources from the course in your assignment to back up your ideas and provide a references page, slide, or poster area with APA references for all resources you used in your presentation.

Part of your grade is based on your presentation of the material, so feel free to use images, clip art, etc.to help illustrate your points. If you download images from the internet, make sure that you cite where they came from!
