Decision-Making Context: Understanding what happened in the past is an important first step in harnessing the power of business analytics. Descriptive analytics answers the questions “What happened?” and “What is happening?” As discussed in the text, the type of data determines the best type of visualizations. In this lab, we analyze categorical data. One way to visualize categorical data is a bar chart, which uses vertical/horizontal bars with varying heights/lengths proportional to the values they represent. Comparing the height/length of the bars allows us to compare the frequency of different categories in the dataset.
Sláinte is a fictional brewery that sells six different beers. It has recently expanded the distribution of its products from one state to nine states, and now its business has begun stabilizing after the expansion. With that stability comes a need for better analysis.
Assume Sláinte has hired you to help management better understand the company’s sales data and provide input for its strategic decisions. Management wants to know total sales revenue for the period as well as the proportion of total sales revenue by each customer. In this lab, you will use Tableau to create a bar chart breaking down total sales revenue by customers who purchased the beer. “Customer” is an example of categorical data.
When you import data into Tableau, it automatically assigns a data type (such as names, dates, or numbers) to each field. As part of the ETL (extract, transform, and load) process, these data types need to be verified and changed if necessary. Based on the data type, Tableau assigns a role to the field: either a dimension or a measure.
• Measures are numeric fields that can be used for mathematical calculations.
• Dimensions are non-numeric and used to categorize data. Dimensions include fields identified as string (text), dates, and geographic data types.
In this lab, you will also add a drop-down filter that allows users to drill down or examine state(s) and/or specific customer(s) in more detail.

Required:
1. Calculate total sales revenue.
2. Create a bar chart for total sales revenue (dollars) broken down by customer.
3. Add filters for customer state and customer business name.
Data: Lab 6.3 Data.xlsx
Specify the Question:
1. What is total sales revenue?
2. How much sales revenue did each customer generate?
3. How much sales revenue did a state generate?
4. How much sales revenue did a product generate?
Obtain the Data: This lab uses the data in Lab 6.3 Data.xlsx, which contains sales transaction data for Sláinte from January through June of 2026. The data dictionary for this file appears on the following page. The data include three worksheets/tables: Sales_Transactions, Customers, and Products. In the Sales_Transactions worksheet/table, the data include an observation/row for each sales transaction and product sold. So, if a transaction included the purchase of two products, the dataset will have one unique Sales_Order_ID with two rows (that is, one for each product).
Analyze the Data: Refer to lab 6.3 in your text for additional instructions and steps.
Upload one Word or PDF document containing all of your screenshots for this Lab using the button below.

1. Take a screenshot of your Tableau worksheet with the filters in place, copy it into a Word document named “Lab 6.3 Tableau Submission.docx”, and label the screenshot Submission 1.
2. Clear the filters so that all observations are showing. Take a screenshot of your worksheet, copy it into the same Word document, and label the screenshot Submission 2.

Note: Submit your answers for the following Analysis Questions in the text entry field below. Answer question in essay format.
1. Instead of using a drop-down list for Product Description, change the filter type to a Wildcard Match by first clicking the down arrow by Product Description then Wildcard Match. Type in “Stout” as well as “stout”. Is a Wildcard Match case-sensitive? Describe the results. Take a screenshot of your results. When would using a Wildcard be helpful?
2. Tableau highlighters help users focus on a particular part of a data visualization. Highlighters call attention to particular data points of interest by coloring them and dimming the remaining data points. Add a highlighter to a copy of the Sales Revenue by Customer worksheet. Make a copy of your worksheet (right-click on the Sales Revenue by Customer tab and select Duplicate). Remove the Product Description from Color in the Marks card. Note that users can still filter for a specific product. From the menu, select Analysis > Highlighter > Customer ID. Click on one customer’s column. Describe what happens. Take a screenshot of your results. When would highlighters be helpful?
