NUR 205 WRITING ASSIGNMENT

In NUR 205, students will complete a writing assignment.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to help the student relate and evaluate a clinical incident, associated with nursing care provided in the medical/surgical clinical setting, by linking evidence- based practice to the incident and guide decision making.

Introduction

New nurses are faced with making many decisions in meeting the needs of their patients. Nursing clinical judgment relates to the life experiences of the practicing nurse and is the end decision made when providing safe patient care (Tanner, 2006). Recognizing patient cues, analyzing those cues, then developing a hypothesis, generating ideas, taking action and finally evaluating the outcome leads to clinical decision making in patient care (Dickison, Haerling, & Lasater, 2019). Evidence-based Practice (EBP) is consideration of clinical problems or questions while using clinical judgment and patient preferences. Integration of EBP happens when students search for evidence to support interventions as part of the rationales for patient care.

Assignment:

The student will write a critically appraised summary of the selected evidence-based nursing article using American Psychological Association (APA) format, professional writing skills and language, while relating the information to the clinical incident in a succinct and clear manner.

The critical reasoning and reflective thinking for the assignment involves three questions:

1. Form a hypothesis. Think about a patient care incident that has occurred in the adult medical- surgical clinical setting: a situation, event, encounter or experience, which has elicited a feeling, emotion, relief, surprise, understanding or confirmation and describe it within the essential context of the incident. This is something that you experience as a student while in the 195 or 205 Adult Med/Surg clinical patient care setting. Use your clinical instructor as a resource.

2. Refine the hypothesis. Why was this incident significant? Describe why this incident was significant enough to affect you or influenced your nursing care or practice

3. Evaluate. Describe specific lessons learned from this incident and what would the student do differently if the incident repeated itself. This section requires the student to search for a nursing article (peer reviewed) that addresses the lesson learned or supports an alternative intervention or approach to the incident. Reference is made to the article in appropriate APA format.

Turnitin

Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct and falls under the Procedure for Disciplinary Action for Academic Misconduct as outlined in the Trident Technical College Student Handbook. Trident Technical College offers students the ability to check for acts of plagiarism in their paper through a web-based program called Turnitin. Turnitin generates a similarity index, which cites areas of plagiarism as a percentage within the paper. The electronic Turnitin similarity is a requirement for this writing assignment. If an originality report from TurnitIn is not completed, five (5) points will be deducted from the writing assignment grade.

Submit to Turnitin through the D2L assignment folder, titled NUR 205 Writing Assignment “Turnitin.” Your report will be ready for your review within 20-30 minutes after submission. On some occasions, it can take up to 24 hours, so plan accordingly when using Turnitin. All submissions to the D2L assignment folder results in an assignment folder receipt. This is not to be confused with the similarity report that appears with the paper.

Submission of Paper

The paper may be submitted prior to but within the deadline date and time as indicated on the course calendar. Submit the following components to the D2L assignment and click on the folder titled NUR 205 Writing Assignment:

 Three page paper including title page, text, and reference page (.docx format)  Full-text nursing Journal article (.pdf format), or use the expanded guideline for DOIs and URLs

as stated in your APA handout for “TTC nursing students”. Failure to submit will result in a five (5) point deduction from the writing assignment grade.

After the paper is submitted to the assignment folder for grading, it is considered final. Five (5) penalty points will be deducted for each day or portion of the day (including weekends and holidays) that the assignment is late. Re-admitted students must submit a new writing assignment using a new clinical incident. Duplication of assignments used previously will receive a grade of zero “0” for the assignment with no opportunity to resubmit the writing assignment for a grade. No late papers will be accepted after the administration of the final exam. If a paper is submitted after the administration of the final exam, a grade of “F” will be given for the final course grade.
