Part I

Observe the children using the Part I Running Record and Frequency Count charts of the template to record the observation information. Complete the template in its entirely. Refer to "Documenting Children Types/Samples."(opens in a new tab) (Review page 2 for an Anecdotal Record example. Review page 4 for a Running Record example. Review page 8 for a Checklist example.) 

Part II

Based on your observation, write a learning story using Part II of the Observation and Learning Story Template. You may use "Waiting for Dad on this Side of the Border"(opens in a new tab) and "Under the Same Sun"(opens in a new tab) as examples to model as you write your learning story.

Your learning story will include the following components.

  1. Title
  2. Summary of the observation from the Running Record and Frequency Count charts.
  3. Analysis of the summary. In the analysis, include what was happening in the room during the observation.
  4. Based on the analysis, identify three discipline or guidance strategies the teacher could implement to support and enhance the child’s learning and / or social-emotional development. [Refer to Lesson 3.]
