For the Module 2 Blog, the student will conduct a case study review of the New York City (NYC) Macroscope, a population health informatics surveillance system developed in 2013. Through the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene launched a program that uses aggregate EHR data from primary care providers to estimate the prevalence of selected disease conditions in NYC. Using data from electronic health records, the goal is for estimates to efficiently and cost-effectively characterize the burden of disease in NYC and changes in that burden over time. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in partnership with the City University of New York School of Public Health, is gathering the data from over 700 ambulatory care practices across the city through a developed informatics system.

A general overview of the NYC Macroscope is found on pages 136-138 in the textbook in Chapter 5. The goal was to establish a surveillance system that aggregated EHR data and compared that data with NYC HANES survey data to see how close it was. If EHR data can be used for population health surveillance, then this opens up a tremendous new way to manage health in a community, state, and nation in a real-time approach.
