– Divide two column and in the left column list your significant past goals; things you had wanted to achieve sometime in your life but never did. List the goals, dreams or aspirations you once held but have let die; those would-have, could-have and should-have goals. These may be career related, health and fitness or athletically related; they could be educational or relationship goals. You get the picture. What have you, in the past, wanted to achieve?
Next review your list of dead dreams and consider why you didn’t pursue or achieve each specific goal. Think back in time. What’s the real reason you did not advance? Were you afraid? Afraid of failing? Of looking bad? Of losing something? Was fear the obstacle holding you back? Or was advancing toward that goal too uncomfortable? Would it have taken what you, at the time thought was too much effort? Was there an easier option? Did you prefer to conserve your energy?
In the right hand column annotate a reason you let that dream die. Too often, life happens and we give up on dreams and sometimes we give up on ourselves.
After reflecting on what’s been holding you back, begin setting yourself up for success. You have an opportunity. Take advantage of that opportunity. Begin to seize the initiative by becoming more competent and improving your ability. Think now about the circumstances of your team. What your team members do? What knowledge, skills and abilities are required to achieve your goal? What are the tasks and skills you as a leader must master to aid, guide and support your team. Some of these skills will be related to management – like planning, organizing, and communicating.
– Develop and prioritize a list of tasks you as the leader should and must master. Publish a training plan for yourself. Determine how you will become skilled in each task.
