A biological anthropologist conducts research in the forests of Tanzania in Eastern Africa. The anthropologist is a researcher based at a major university in the United States, and she spends eight weeks every summer living in the forest and observing wild chimpanzees. During the twenty years she has worked in the area, she has formed close partnerships with local scholars and residents. Her current field team is made of students from the United States and from Tanzania, as well as professional colleagues from both countries. She also hires residents from the local village to help with tracking and documenting the chimpanzees and to act as field staff, including drivers, cooks, and guides. When the anthropologist is not in the field herself, other members of her research team are still there maintaining regular observations of the chimpanzees year-round.
The AABA Code of Ethics requires that anthropologists obtain informed consent from their study participants. In this situation, the anthropologist is studying wild chimpanzees. From whom should she obtain informed consent for this work? Why is this the correct person/group to get consent from?
The anthropologist is very proud of the work her team is doing, and she would like to share it with a general audience. What formats might she use to spread the word about the team’s work to the general public? She is concerned about sharing sensitive information because the chimpanzees are endangered, and she doesn’t want to put them at greater risk from illegal hunting or deforestation (cutting down their forest). What precautions might she take to make sure the information is spread responsibly?
