In this week’s lecture, we talk about how companies are under increased pressure to speak out about social and political issues. In the lecture, we focus more on those social and political items that are related to societal issues. For example, race in America is a societal issue that impacts employees in a business and employees or individuals outside of a business.

What if the issue in question is directly related to the core product or service the company offers? Put differently, what if employees pressure a business to change something essential about their business that can dramatically impact the company’s operations or profitability? For this assignment, you will explore what occurred when employees began to put pressure on Facebook’s leadership to change the type of information permitted on the social media platform (i.e.something core to their product).

Caveat: This assignment surrounds political content but you are by no means meant to voice or defend your personal opinions about the topic. The objective of this assignment is to witness the pressure applied to a business by a group of employees and explore what could occur if circumstances were to change for employees or for the company. In a future lecture, we will discuss what can happen when companies take certain political stances that could result in them discriminating against someone for their beliefs.
