The global pandemic, and our nation’s response to it, has become highly political since the virus arrived in America two years ago. Americans looked to the government for answers as the pandemic swept the country. But who had the responsibility, and the power, to help – local governments, the states, the federal government, all of the above?? COVID-19 has required the government to figure out where the often blurry lines of federalism lie – was it the states’ responsibility or the federal government’s responsibility to figure out a proper response to this crisis? As we moved into vaccinating the American public, should it have been the states’ responsibility to determine how the vaccine was distributed or should the federal government assist in ensuring effective, quick distribution (such as using the military)? Cities across America played the largest role in the early distribution fo the vaccine to many Americans. With the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act by the U.S. Congress, mandates were handed down on how local governments should handle many aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Discuss how you feel about the United States’ initial reaction to COVID-19 and how that affects where we are today. Do you feel each state should have decided for themselves how to handle their own COVID response or should there have been a federal response that applied to the entire nation? As far as the vaccine is concerned, do you feel that each state should handle their own affairs or should the federal government be able to step in and tell the states what to do at this point? Are some issues on which the states differ matters of fundamental rights that should be uniform across the country or is it important to preserve state choice on most matters? Finally, what role did cities play, how did fend for yourself federalism come in to play for local governments and how do you feel this stacks up with?what you read about federalism and intergovernmental relations in your textbook?
