Journal of Christopher Columbus, 1492
There are three types of sources that historians can use to define and discover history. Primary sources, secondary sources, and tertiary sources. What one thinks of when they hear primary source is a detail of an event written by someone who experienced the event. This is correct but it is not the only thing that can be a primary source when it comes to history. Newspapers, songs, films, paintings, or anything else that existed through the time period or event can also be a primary source according to Kathryn Walbert in Reading Primary Sources. A secondary source would be a document written by someone who writes an interpretation of a primary source or uses primary sources as evidence. Finally, a tertiary source is books or logs that just exist as a collection of information; a dictionary would be a good example of this.
The Journal of Christopher Columbus is a primary source document for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it was written during the event as it is a journal that specifies every couple of days in 1942. It also details his thoughts and observations on native Americans through a direct view of the events taking place live. The journal also details the Admiral’s speech, which could imply that the document is a secondary source. This is not the case as it gives the perspective of a person at the event watching the speech. This is followed by his thoughts on the speech after interacting with the natives. All of the information above shows that the Journal of Christopher Columbus is a primary source.
The perspective of this source is from the renowned explorer Christopher Columbus. The source is in the form of a journal that provides an update every couple of days on how they interacted with the natives. This journal is incredibly useful to assess the personality of the famous Christopher Columbus as well as to figure out what was going through his head in regard to his thoughts about the natives. The perspective of this journal is rather limited because it does not discuss feelings about anything other than impressions of certain groups. This is due to the journal being focused on all of Columbuss thoughts on what he could do for his country. This is further shown during the sentences written on October 14th, 1942, where he writes about how it will be easy to force them to work for the economic benefit of his country. Overall, the Journal is a source that is incredibly useful for knowledge of that time period.
