The story starts with Margaux going to an island for summer vacation where she finds a little girl sitting on the shore with her doll. She approaches the little girl who looks uncomfortable because of Margaux sitting next to her. To make her comfortable, Margaux tells her about her doll that she had in childhood which she had to leave. The little girl named Maggie asks her to tell the reason for abandoning the doll but Margaux says that she needs to tell the reason for her being so uncomfortable. Then, Maggie cries and reveals that she is being molested by her Uncle George while her aunt Vicky knows everything, she would not stand for her since she is afraid of being abandoned by her husband. This makes Margaux sad and she goes in for a hug for Maggie and assures to protect her at any cost. During this event, there is a flashback of Margaux thoughts where she is thinking about the way Uncle George used to sexually assault her when she used to play with her doll and while Aunt Vicky knows about it, she did not do enything for Margaux. This is how it is revealed to the readers that Maggie, the little girl, is actually Margaux herself and the shore is her mind where her inner child is sitting with this trauma. She approaches her and takes responsibility to help her come out of it no matter what. The ending is the little girl revealing that she is being sexually harassed by her uncle and this conflict leads towards resolution/climax through Margaux’ childhood’s flashbacks. This conflict is human vs herself as Margaux is not confronting her Uncle George for what he did to her, nor is she confronting her Aunt Vicky, rather she is confronting her own trauma and inner child, thus, this conflict is human vs. herself in nature. Moreover, in the plot, the real identity of Maggie is concealed to build suspense which will be resolved in the end when readers will know about Maggie being Margaux’ child-self.
